How to calculate CPA by hand
The formula is simple; the key is defining "new customer."
CPA = ad spend / number of new customers
Two practical examples
Cosmetics ecommerce
You spend $2,000 in Meta Ads. The campaign brings 200 new orders (AOV $60, 40% margin).
CPA = 2,000 / 200 = $10
Profit per order $24 − $10 CPA = $14. Healthy.
B2B agency, lead-gen
You spend $1,500, the campaign produces 50 leads, of which 5 close.
CPA = 1,500 / 5 = $300 per client
If a client generates at least $900 of profit, CPA makes sense.
