How to calculate MER by hand
The formula is trivial. The key is deciding what counts as "marketing spend."
MER = total revenue / total marketing spend
Two practical examples
Multi-channel ecommerce
You spend $20,000 across Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, and influencers. Company revenue $80,000.
MER = 80,000 / 20,000 = 4.0
Solid for ecommerce at 40% margin. Marketing nets $12,000 of gross profit.
D2C brand with brand campaigns
You spend $15,000 (50% brand + 50% performance). Revenue $45,000.
MER = 45,000 / 15,000 = 3.0
Typical for a brand investing in long-term visibility — ROAS from performance campaigns alone would be higher.
